Early Life
Many people describe the power of an American dream, and they many times tell the tales of rags-to-riches stories, and they are true in many cases. But, thanks to the internet, many similar stories are coming up with a media twist to them. This latter scenario can best explain how Awkwafina transformed her career from a DIY rapper on YouTube to a full-fledged American movie star.
Awkwafina was born Nora Lum Ying as a daughter to a South Korean mother and a Chinese-American father living in New York City. Similar to the several young New York people who went on to become stars, she acquired a nickname. She attended LaGuardia High School and learned to play trumpet there. She dubbed herself with the stage name in the high school itself. Later, she dismissed the name as a schoolyard inside joke, but it has stuck with her. She just thought that it was a funny name, and as she was a little awkward herself, it fitted her.
Awkwafina undertook college studies in the fields of Mandarin and journalism. These studies were followed by publicity and journalism internships, but they did not lead her to spotlight. What did take her to fame was the internet. At the time she was still studying, she did a bit of rap. She was trying to for ways to harness the awkwardness into comedy. She began to rap at the age of 13, and after trying her luck on social media for a decade, she finally went viral.
Early Career
Her first hit on the internet was called “My Vag” and it was developed as a response to Mickey Avalon’s “My Dick”. These were the heydays for Gangnam style and lonely island kind of comic songs accompanied by slick videos. This kind of music did wonderfully well on You Tube scenario. Although “My Dick” is mostly a forgotten entity, the music video had more than half a million views. “My Vag,” on the other hand, has shown more endurance, and it was this video that launched Awkwafina to stardom.
“My Vag” was special even in the era it was released. The music video was funny and contained the Brooklynite absurdity you usually associate with Noah Baumbach and Wes Anderson films. It had an excellent vaudevillian vagina sight gag blended with some well-written lines such as “My Vag squirt Aloe Vera and Yo Vag look like Tony Danza. The song was tailor-made for the times.
Awkwafina Music Career
In the next five years, Awkwafina was to release a music album along with half a dozen more singles. This era had several comedians who could not manage to go viral twice. However, Awkwafina had that magic. Everything she placed on the Tube was to get thousands of views and often ended up reaching the million views mark. Although none of these videos could again garner the same quantity of views as “My Vag”, they helped establish the smart, saucy, and bawdy comic personality of Awkwafina. These releases also meant that now she had a brigade of loyal fans.
Awkwafina scored yet another massive hit with “NYC Bitche$”. The song became an anthem for young women born and raised in New York. The song displayed their favorite haunts succumbing to gentrification. The song had a hook that went like this, “New York City bitch, that’s where I come from/Not where I moved to on Mom and Dad’s trust fund / New York City bitch, that’s how I’m rolling / You out-of-state-fakes get your iPad stolen.” These lines identified with a cohort of kids who watched their young stomping ground coming back into vogue. Many had fled the suburbs, though.
There were other singles released by Awkwafina as well, such as “Queef”, “Mayor Bloomberg,” “Daydreamin,” “Pockeiz,” and “Green Tea”. Most of these songs were available on the Awkwafina EP called “Yellow Ranger”. These songs consolidated Awkwafina’s reputation and her on-stage persona. Even after she became famous as an actress, she continued her rapping career with another EP in 2018 “In Fina We Trust.”
Despite her success, Lum has maintained that she never had a plan. She says that she never followed a roadmap. It’s just the way it was. The moves she followed after becoming a star on the internet were quite savvy though for the 21st-century aspiring comedy star. Her rap music videos opened the doors for all kinds of content on the internet, which continued to raise her stardom, and she proved that she was up to the challenge.
On-screen
In 2014 Awkwafina appeared at the Festival Supreme with Tenacious D. In the same year, Awkwafina joined “Girl Code” by MTV. This series was a take-off on the “Guy Code.” The shows were MTV’s attempts to bring the famous comedy voices from the internet onto a show. Many actors from both these shows leveraged the popularity as a stepping stone to raise their career further.
In 2016 Awkwafina made a short web series called Tawk, which was honored by Webby Awards and was later nominated for the Streamy Awards. Awkwafina hosted this show from the store corners, subways, and Laundromats. However, talk shows by comedians is not a new concept, and similar to her music Tawk was an old format wrapped in a new cover.
After all that work on the internet, it was expected that she made a breakthrough onto the big stage. It happened with “Neighbors 2”. This role was followed by a couple of good performances in Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians. These films showcased Awkwafina portraying personas that were close to her online character. Lum’s acting career is similar to a stand up mimic breaking through onto the mainstream cinema.
Most of her roles are character performances and yet show her comic skills. The years spent publishing on YouTube has trained her well for the big spotlight. She went on to star in big films such as The Farewell and Jumanji: The Next Level. Awkwafina recently created history when she became the 1st Asian artist to win a Golden Globe award for the lead actress in the films category.
Other movies/tv series she has been in/on Animals, The Farewell, Paradise Hills, Weird City, The Simpsons, Tuca & Bertie, Angry Birds 2, The Dark Crystal, Between Two Ferns, Jumanji, Call Your Mother, Awkwafina is Nora from Queens.
Five years ago, the comedian and rapper were working at a vegan bodega for $9 an hour. Today she has broken through to become a part of two of the biggest blockbusters from Hollywood. She has worked with Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchet, Constance Wu, Ken Jeong, and Michelle Yeoh.
More movies are on the way like The SpongeBob Movie, Breaking News in Yuba County, Raya and the Last Dragon, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, The Little Mermaid, The Baccarat Machine and expect to see many more in the future as she is an up and coming star.
Love Life & Hobbies
Awkwafina is quite secretive about her love life. There are several people out there who are wondering whether she is secretly married. Well, she isn’t married, but maybe it is in a serious relationship. In 2018 she admitted that she was over her fear of love affairs and has settled with a long-term boyfriend. She also admitted in the same interview that she was not made for family life. Apart from her professional interests, such as singing, dancing, and listening to music, Awkwafina also likes to watch movies, travel and reading books.
