Yovanovitch was born in 1958 in Quebec, Canada to Mikhail Yovanovitch and Nadia Yovanovitch. Marie moved to Connecticut at the age of three and became an American citizen at the age of 18. In 1976, she graduated from the Kent School. In 1980, she earned a B.A. in History and Russian Studies from Princeton University. After that, she received M.S. from the National Defense University’s National War College in 2001.

Yovanovitch began her diplomatic career in 1986. Her first foreign assignment in Ottawa was followed by an overseas assignment in Moscow, London, and Mogadishu. In 1998, she served as the Deputy Director of the Russian Desk in the U.S. Department of State.

On November 20, 2004, Yovanovitch was appointed U.S Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan. She hold her position until February 4, 2008. Six months later, she was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Armenia. Her nomination as ambassador to Armenia was confirmed by Senate on a voice vote. She remained in this post until June 9, 2011.

After returning to America in 2012, she served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs. For her service performance, she was awarded the Senior Foreign Service Performance Award and the Superior Honor Award five times. In 2016, she was promoted to the rank of Career Minister.

On July 14, 2016, Yovanovitch was confirmed by Senate as a U.S. ambassador to Ukraine. She was respected within the national security community for her efforts to encourage Ukraine to tackle corruption.

In May 2019, President Trump abruptly recalled Yovanovitch form her post following claims by Trump surrogates that she was undermining Trump’s efforts to pressure Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden. She was dismissed from her post by Trump via phone call.
