Early Life

Eugenio’s mother was a renowned publicist and actress. He was born in 1961 in Mexico City. Derbez developed an early interest in acting as he landed his first role in Mexican soap operas at the age of 12. He kept the acting career going during his schooling years and by the time he was 19 he was studying acting at Televisa acting school. He later graduated as a film director from MICT. He was a regular member of several Mexican TV shows during the 1980s and 90s. He became a household name in Mexico after producing his comedy TV series called “Al Derecho y al Derbez”. Other sitcoms followed and some of them were the longest-running sitcoms even in the U.S.

It was in the year 1988 when Eugenio got his first recurring position in a TV show called Anabel. He played several comedy roles in the series. He kept making movies during the 1990s but made his directorial debut in a soap opera called No Tengo Madre in 1997. Derbez is one of the very few Mexican actors to have reached the stardom internationally. He has earned several international awards and has starred in many commercially successful American films.

Despite the massive popularity he enjoyed with the Spanish speaking audience right through Northern America, Eugenio never actually managed to make a breakthrough with the U.S audience until 2011 when he appeared in “Jack and Jill” made by Adam Sandler.
