Garrett was born on March 28, 1966, in Abington, Pennsylvania. His father Jim Garrett was an assistant coach for the New York Giants, New Orleans Saint, and Cleveland Browns. Meanwhile, Jason’s brothers, John and Judd are also football players who played in the World League of American Football. John is currently the head coach of Lafayette College football team while Judd works in the Dallas Cowboys front office.

Garrett attended prep school at University School in Ohio and was a letterman in football, basketball, and baseball. He then went to Princeton, where he began as the starting quarterback of the freshman team. He transferred to Columbia University when his father Jim Garrett became the head coach in 1985. After his father decided to step down from the head coach, Jason and his two brothers transferred back to Princeton.

Jason Garrett was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New Orleans Saints at the 1989 NFL Draft. In 1991, he started at a quarterback for the San Antonio Riders of the World League of American Football. The same year, he was signed by the Ottawa Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League.

In 1993, Garrett signed for the Dallas Cowboys where he played very well for the Cowboys although his time on the field was very limited. He was a part of the 1993 and 1995 Super Bowl-winning teams. In his eight seasons with the Cowboys, he played in 39 games and completed 165 of 294 passes for 2,042 yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions.

Garrett was signed as a free agent in 2000 by New York Giants followed by Tampa Bay Buccaneers four years later. On November 24, 2004, he was signed as a free agent by the Miami Dolphins.

After retiring as a player, he became the quarterbacks’ coach for the Miami Dolphins in the 2005 season under the head coach Nick Saban. In 2007, Garrett was hired by the Dallas Cowboys as an offensive coordinator and three years later, he was named interim head coach of the Cowboys. He is currently the Head coach of the Cowboys team.
