Deval Patrick is an American politician who was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1956. His father was a musician and left the family when Patrick was young. His mother raised him at the Robert Taylor Homes area near Chicago’s southern side. When he was in the 8th grade, Deval was recruited for a program called “A Better Chance” as it provided scholarships to the inner city students. He attended an elite private school called Milton Academy just out of Boston, Massachusetts. After this, he was accepted by Harvard University, where he earned his A.B. degree in American literature and English in 1978.
Deval Patrick was a close ally and friend of former President Barack Obama. He was a key surrogate during the Obama re-election campaign in 2012. Patrick is only the second elected African-American governor ever in American history after the Virginia governor Doug Wilder. Patrick was a little known candidate during the election of the governor of Massachusetts in 2007 and was successful in getting the Democrats back to the office for the first time since 1991.

Career
After he had graduated from Harvard, Deval Patrick was rewarded with a Rockefeller fellowship. During this period, he worked for the U.N. and traveled to and lived in Sudan. Patrick returned to the U.S. in 1979 to take admission to Harvard Law School. He received a J.D. degree in the year 1982. Later he worked as a clerk for the U.S. court of appeals in the 9th circuit in L.A. for a year. Then he moved to New York City to join NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. Here he met Bill Clinton. He then filed a lawsuit against Clinton in a voting rights case. Clinton was the governor at the time.
He stayed with NAACP till 1986 when he decided to join a Boston law firm called Hill & Barlow, P.C., as one of the partners. Patrick kept on with his civil rights work, and it was in 1994 he was appointed in the position of assistant attorney general by Bill Clinton. He was in charge of the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. While working in this role, Patrick worked to make sure that the federal laws that banned discrimination got enforced. He was also in charge of an investigation that looked into a series of church burnings in the South.
After serving for three years in the Clinton administration, Patrick went back to private practice with a Boston law firm called Day, Berry, & Howard. While working here, he concentrated his efforts on major civil rights compliance and commercial litigation issues. Later, Patrick was associated with Texaco in 1999 as general counsel and vice president. He became a general counsel, executive vice president, and a secretary to Coca-Cola. Here he was responsible for the worldwide legal affairs of the company. He left Coca-Cola in 2004.
Patrick still serves on the director board of Reebok international Inc., A Better Chance Inc., and Coca Cola Enterprises. Patrick is the trusty for Ford Foundation and is a member of the board of overseers for Harvard University and also the Museum of Fine Arts in the city of Boston. Patrick has received several awards and is the recipient of 7 honorary degrees.
During the year 2006, after completing one of the extraordinary journeys in the field of politics seen by the state of Massachusetts, Patrick won the election of the state governor with a landslide margin. Patrick rejected the false choices all his life, and the new fund he was part of was intended to show that some private companies can become a force for the public good. Through his career in the private sector and public offices, Patrick has been a leader in developing solutions for the challenges the nation faces, such as health care, climate change, and the future of innovation and work.
Presidential Campaign 2020
Deval Patrick was the governor of the Democratic Party in Massachusetts. On November 14, 2019, he announced that he was running for the President of the United States. However, he had to suspend the presidential campaign on February 12, 2020, because he did not receive any delegates in Iowa caucuses or the New Hampshire presidential primary. On his campaign website, Patrick said that he was looking to renew the American dream with what he called reforms, opportunity, and democratic agendas. He also indicated that he was in support of the establishment of public options; however, not under the terms such as Medicare for everyone, eliminating the student loan debts, and simplifying the taxation system.
Joe Biden Endorsement
Patrick announced in the first week of March that he would endorse Joe Biden in what looked like a two-way race for the Democratic candidate, along with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. Patrick said about his move that, this a moment that could have a great consequence in the U.S. He added that at this point, the American democracy is at risk, and the economy is not working well for many citizens. America’s role in the world is not steady. The country needs an experienced leader who can make life better for all citizens, and Joe Biden is that person.
Patrick joined the list of around 100 leaders from the Bay State who endorsed Biden’s campaign. Other notable leaders include Rep. Seth Moulton, Stephen Lynch, and John Kerry, and so on. In a statement, Patrick described his work as the governor of Massachusetts, and he said that Biden was the go-to man during the Obama administration for stimulus spending during the 2008 financial crisis. This funding was used to improve state schools. His association with Biden dates even further back when he was the civil rights lawyer, and Biden was the Senate Judiciary Committee chair.
