According to Celebrity Net Worth, as of 2019, Honnold’s total fortune is estimated to be $1.5 million. Hannold mentioned in his documentary that he makes the same amount of money as a moderately successful dentist. Though he is arguably the best in this field, the market isn’t big enough to be lucrative. Yet, he is an outlier since he is one of the few who has been able to do well from this profession alone.

He now even has a house in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 2018 documentary film “Free Solo” won a Best Documentary Feature at the 91st Academy Awards managing to gross well over $20 million.

2. He started climbing when he was 5 years old

He started climbing at a very young age and developed a love for it. By the time, he was 10, he would regularly climb walls even participating in different championships.

He later studied at the University of California focusing on engineering. Yet, he realized that climbing is his real passion and left college in his sophomore year. He moved back home with his parents then.

3. The Regular Northwest Face of Half Dome elevated his fame

In 2012, this ascent would make him featured in the film Alone on the Wall. Then, opportunities started to pile up and gradually helped him build a personal brand of his own. 2017 would be a very important year for him where he would become the first ever to ascent El Capitan eventually being the main subject of the documentary Free Solo.

4. He used to live in a van

Hannold comes from a humble background. Even after he became famous, he still lived below his means. In fact, he has lived in a van for over a decade. He says that suited the lifestyle that he picked traveling from one place to another.

He shared his philosophy was to not spend the money that he didn’t have. He once said in an interview that he has never been in debt and never spends on luxuries. He added in his memoir, Alone in the Wall how his lifestyle has upgraded but the philosophy remains the same.

Today, he says that he gives one-third of his salary to charity through the Honnold Foundation that is currently focused on promoting solar energy in the developing world.

5. Hannold is a pure vegetarian

Hannold tries to maintain a very healthy lifestyle being a vegetarian. He also abstains from alcohol and other drugs as well. He considers himself to be an environmentalist. This is a major reason why Honnold has become a partner for Beyond Meats which is seeking to create the future of protein by providing people with plant-based dishes and shifting from animal to a plant-based meat form.
