Darius Garland is an American basketball player who used to play for the Southeastern Conference (SEC) team called Vanderbilt Commodores. His competency can be seen from the fact that he is a five-star recruit as well as a McDonald’s All-American.

1. Early Life

Garland was born on January 26, 2000, in Gary, Indiana. In his early childhood, he played both baseball and basketball. However, later he felt that he enjoyed basketball a lot more and focused more upon it. He studied at Brentwood Academy and over the years gained more and more tuned towards basketball. He would also be involved in different camps as a kid that elevated his interest as well as skills in the game.

Soon, he would be playing against students who were way older than him. It reached a moment where he didn’t play against those his age he felt the local teams there could not meet his standards. He became a part of the varsity basketball team in eighth grade.

In the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Division II-AA state championship, he played an integral part in them being the champions with him averaging 13 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. His time from the sophomore to the junior year saw him being ranked as the best point guard in the 2018 class by recruiting service 247Sports.

Darius also managed to be a semifinalist for the Naismith Trophy that year and recorded a game-high 11 assists at the 2018 McDonald’s All-American Game. He also has a love for dunks which was seen in his participation in the Jordan Brand Classic and Nike Hoop Summit. By the time that he left, he already had four state championships as well as the title of being Tennessee Mr. Basketball winner three times.

He had been associated with Vanderbilt since he was young and committed to them with him being described as the best recruit in program history. His most memorable match while there was against Liberty where he scored a season-high 33 points, the second-most points by a freshman in school history. Sadly, only five games into his college career, a major meniscus injury would cut short his time there and resulted in him having to leave the team. The coach Bryce Drew made this announcement that would leave his well-wishers devastated. From there on, Garland felt that the best decision was to start preparing for the NBA draft.
