Joey was born on March 11, 1956, in Massapequa, New York. He graduated from Massapequa High School.

His sexual relation with Amy Fisher happened 27 years ago. It started when a 17-year-old girl named Amy Fisher shot Joey Buttafuoco’s wife Mary Jo in the face on Mary 19, 1992 in Long Island, New York. Fisher had come to Buttafuoco’s house and confronted Mary about her husband with whom she had been having a sexual relationship since July 1991.

After the incident, Joey was charged and sentenced to six months for statutory rape following his sexual relationship with minor Amy who was 16 years old at that time. Amy was arrested and charged with attempted murder and was released from prison in 1991. Meanwhile, Mary Jo survived the shot but told Oprah Winfrey that she suffered from facial paralysis and ear damage.

Other than that, Buttafuoco has been convicted of several crimes. In 1995, he pleaded no contest to a solicitation of prostitution charge and was placed on probation for two years. In 2004, he was sentenced to a year in jail and five years of probation after pleading guilty to auto insurance fraud. Joey was also charged with illegal possession of ammunition in 2005.

The coverage of shooting incident by several media made Buttafuoco like a minor celebrity. The incident was discussed so many times on David Letterman show that Buttafuoco’s name was a recurring punchline. Saturday Night Live also parodied the case in multiple sketches.
