Ruiz was born on September 11, 1989, in Imperial Valley, California. In 2013, he fought against Joe Hanks for vacant WBO Inter-Continental heavyweight title. He won the title dropping Hanks twice in round 4, forcing the stoppage. He then retained his WBO Inter-Continental title and won vacant NABF heavyweight title in a fight against Tor Hamer.

Ruiz was unstoppable winning fight after fight against the likes of Ray Austin, Manuel Quezada, until his first defeat came at the hands of Joseph Parker. Joseph won the bout via majority decision. He came back strong after defeating Frank Warren in the first round. So far, Ruiz has been involved in a total of 34 fights where he has recorded 33 wins and lost one match. He has won 22 matches by KO.

On June 1, Ruiz defeated English boxer Anthony Joshua via technical knockout in the seventh round to win the WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO titles. It is considered one of the biggest upsets in boxing history.

In September 2019, it was announced that Ruiz would be defending his titles against Anthony Joshua in a rematch. The fight is scheduled for December 7, 2019.
