Lederman was born on January 26, 1940, in The Bronx, New York. He went to Columbia University and after graduation earned a license from New York’s State Athletic Commission to judge fights.  From 1967 to 1986, he judged over a hundred title fights all around the globe.

His breakthrough came in 1986 after HBO executive producer Ross Greenburg invited him to join HBO’s boxing show World Championship Boxing as an expert commentator. Although he retired from judging in 1999, he worked with the HBO as an unofficial ringside scorer.

Harold was loved for his honest analysis and jubilant personality. Over the five decades of his boxing career, he was respected all around the world and celebrated by the many people who make the sport what it is.

Lederman has earned several awards and honors during his time at boxing. In 2006, he earned “Good Guy Award” by Boxing Writers Association of America. In 1997, he was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame and in 2016 he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Regarding his personal life, Lederman married Eileen Lederman in 1963. He has two daughters named Julie Lederman and Iris Lederman. Julie is following her father into the business as a ringside judge. When not commentating, she can be seen in interviews from the boxing press.

On May 11, 2019, at the age of 79, Harold died after his lengthy battle with cancer. HBO confirmed Lederman’s passing following a tweet from former network executive Lou DiBella.

According to HBO Sports executive vice president Peter Nelson, Lederman was loved and added a new component in boxing coverage. He said: “Harold had a lifelong love affair with the sport of boxing. Harold was happiest when seated ringside, studying the action and scoring the fight”. He added “When he joined HBO Sports in 1986, he added a new and critical component to live boxing coverage. Viewers embraced his unique style and his command of the rules while his broadcast colleagues relished his enthusiasm and boundless energy.”
