Early Life

Nancy Pelosi’s maiden name was Nancy Patricia D’Alesandro, and she was born in Baltimore, Maryland. She was the youngest of seven children and the only girl child in the family. Both her parents originated from Italy. She belonged to a politically active family, and at the time of her birth, her father was a congressman from Maryland belonging to the Democratic Party. One of her brothers, Thomas D’Alesandro 3rd, was also active in politics and was the mayor of Baltimore who served in the post from 1967 to 1971. In addition to this, her mother was also an active member of the Democratic Party, organizing the women at the party. So, Nancy Pelosi gradually became involved in the party activities at an early age as she began helping in her father’s activities in his different events. Nancy graduated from an all-girls Catholic High School in 1958. The school was called the Institute of Notre Dame. She attended Trinity College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the college in 1962.

Political Career at a Glance

Nancy Pelosi started her career by serving as an intern to Senator Daniel Brewster in Maryland in the 1960s. She moved to San Francisco later, where she connected with a congressman from the 5th district called Phillip Burton. She was elected as a Democratic National Committee member in 1976 from California. She was to hold onto the position till 1996. She also served in many other capacities for the Democratic Party in the late 1970s and 1980s. For instance, she was the finance chair for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Phillip Burton passed away in the year 1983, and his wife, Sala Burton succeeded him. Later, when she no longer wished to run for re-election, she designated Nancy Pelosi as the successor. This also guaranteed the fact that the earlier supporters of Burton would now support Pelosi. After Sala Burton’s untimely death during the beginning of Nancy’s second term, there was a special election held, and Nancy Pelosi won the election to go to the office of 5th District congresswoman in June 1987. She was responsible for the 5th District from 1987 to 1993 and then for the 8th District from 1993 to 2013, and for 12th District from 2013 to present.

Nancy held many other significant positions such as House Minority Whip from 2002 to 2003, Leader of the House Democratic Caucus from 2003, House Minority Leader from 2003 to 2007, and again later from 2011 to 2019, and as the Speaker of United States House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011. She was again sworn-in as the Speaker in January 2019. She is the only individual since Sam Rayburn, who in 1955 was re-elected to the position of Speaker for non-repeated terms. But, for being the Speaker again, she had to agree to a deal that was to limit her to just four years as the Speaker.

The ways of Nancy Pelosi

Some of the notable moments of Nancy Pelosi’s second term as the Speaker of the House include presiding over the impeachment hearing of President Donald Trump on September 24, 2019. Nancy is a lifelong supporter of the Democrat Party, and her voting record has a grade of 92% on civil liberties provided by the American Civil Liberties Union Congressional Scorecard. She has consistently voted in favor of liberal causes such as LGBTQ+ rights, Gun Control, and Abortion Rights. She has also been consistently against things such as welfare reforms or the Iraq War. She has always been a polarizing figure in the political circles both in and out of her party. However, several people regard her as a highly-skilled and a shrewd politician who is capable of keeping the fractured Democratic Party together.

Although Nancy was active in politics her entire life, including activities as a leading fundraiser for Democrats and being the chairperson for the party in the state of California, she did not actually run for office until she was forty-seven. She preferred to wait until the youngest of her children had reached the high school senior stage before she ran for congress in the year 1987. The Republican National Committee Chairman said about her; she is neither a new Democrat nor an old Democrat but a “pre-historic Democrat.” Other rival party members call her “latte Democrat” due to her progressive views on women’s rights, environment, labor unions, and other problems.
